While solar energy has been used very effectively in less power hungry, though heavy duty stuff like heating water, It has always been a challenge adapting solar power effectively for energy guzzling appliances such as an air conditioner.

Well, hope that is a thing of the past. This latest press release reports “Californian based Greencore has developed a solar-powered air conditioning system for both fixed and mobile applications which can keep a room up to 600 square feet cool using a single 170 watt solar panel or switch to using power from the grid when necessary”

THough Maati endeavours that all solar powered applicances should have minimum usage of batteries, as of now, batteries still are needed to store and use solar energy when the sun is unavailable. This is what this new system claims to be doing effectively as well. So it is great for those humid days when the sun is playing truant.

Maati also supports cheap and readily available solar and renewable energy. THis baby though comes at a a price that might not be suitable to most homes. Starting at $5700, it is now being sold commercially only- depending upon the model with solar panels and extra batteries sold separately. Another version of the product- the mobile unit comes with one solar panel as standard and the heating component is an extra USD$400.

Companies like McDonald’s are already testing the systems and so is the US Navy apparently. Maati team wishes best of luck to such developments.
